GRAVE STONE RECORDS

From the ancient Cemeteries in the town of

Claremont, New Hampshire.

With historical and biographical notes.

Compiled by
CHARLES B. SPOFFORD

CLAREMONT
CiEOKGE I. PUTNAM

1896

INTRODUCTION.

An increasing interest in family history and genealogy lias caused numerous
inquiries concerning early families of Claremont.

In many instances no replies can be made for lack of evidence that the
parties were buried here. No town records of death exist prior to 1846. Many
of the stones have already become so weather beaten that it is with difficulty
they are transcribed, and a few years will entirely obliterate them.

Believing that a printed record of these will be of service to posterity as
well as of value to the historian and genealogist, a transcript has been made of
all the stones in the West Claremont churchyard, the village burying ground,
the Jarvis yard, and all prior to 1846 in the Catholic cemetery. The town
records give dates of deaths of all interments here since that year.

The usual couplets and verses upon the old stones have not been copied
unless they in some way give facts worth recording. In other words the record
is a plain statement of facts with such notes as it has seemed proper to add for
reference or information.

To this transcript it is not proposed to add any extended notes. In some
instances, however, items are introduced regarding the native place, and service
as soldiers or public officials. Whenever the maiden name of a wife or widow
is. known, but does not appear on the stone, it is inserted in parentheses.

The usual abbreviations will be used, omitting in most instances the words
"died," and "aged."

The names are arranged alphabetically for easy reference.

THE OLD BURYING GROUND, CLAREMONT

VILLAGE.

The first mention of this yard occurs' in the town records as follows:
"August 27, 1792. Voted to give off the school lot two acres of land for n
Burying yard near the meeting house.

"Voted — to accept a highway from AtkinS' Bridge (now called the upjicr
bridge) to the meeting house through James Strowbridge's land.

"Voted — to exchange one acre and two rods of land off of the school lot
No. 29 with Mr. Samuel Whipple for one acre and two rods of land on which
the meeting house stands.

"March 31, 1801, Mr. John Whitty was appointed sc.xton to dig graves in
the Burying yard near the meeting house.

"March 13, 1804. Voted — That a hearse and harness be piocurc.d for the
Burying yard by the meeting house and also one for the church burying yard."

By reference to the town treasurer's accounts it is found that these hearses
were built by William Rliodes at a cost of $182.61, and that Capt. Timothy
Munger was paid $63.00 for a hearse house.

Capt. Petty's father, Joseph, was in a scouting party against Indians near

travel, he was left beside a spring to live if he could until help came. Two
days after Capt. Phineas Stevens, afterwards of Charlestown. X. H., with
a party from Fort Dummer, made search but found no tr.ace. In June,
Lieutenant Hunt went with fifteen men from Northfield "to bury Sergeant
Petty." Presumably they did so. Reuben, the subject, was .Sergeant
PcltyV oldest son, born July 31, 1738. He served in the French and Indian
wars, was sergeant and was taken prisoner at Fort \\'illiam Henry, Aug. 'i.

Oliver Ashley was the son of Col. Samuel, one of the proprietors of the
town, and one of the early settlers. Was Captain of the Claremont com-
pany at Bennington, and established .Ashley's Ferry in 1784. In October,
1788, he married Olive Lawrence. .Another record shows an Oliver to
have married Eunice Doolittle Aug. 9, 1770. If the same Oliver it is
probable that Olive Lawrence was a second wife.
Ashley Olive (Lawrence), wife of Oliver. Oct. 30. 1S35, 74y.
Ashlc}' Samuel, Hon. -'Biessed with good natural talents, and a
heart rightly to improve them, he in various departments of
civil and military life exhibited a cliaracter honorable to him-
self and useful to others. Having presided for several years
in the lower coiu't of this county he with probity and fidel-
ity displayed the virtues of the patriot and Christian, as
well in pablic as domestic life. The small pox put an ei d
to his earthly course Feb. iS, 1793, aged 71."
Colonel Ashley was one of the proprietors of the town, settling here soon
after the Revolution, and doing much to promote its growth. An extended
sketch of this man was published in the Granite .Monthly, ^L^v. iSy^, and a
corrected ancestry in the same magazine a few months later.

The circumstances of his death have been related by his gianddaughtev,
Mrs. Harriet^ Parmelee Smith, of Broolclyn, N. Y., whose mother was a
daughter of the subject. It is said by Mrs. Smith that he was engaged in
burning a joile of logs, and they rolled, falling upon him and pinning hjjn to
the ground. He shouted for help and his wife attempted to assist him but
to no avail. A townraeeting was being held and all the men in "the neigh-

(jrder of their lineal descendant, Geo. Wheaton Sumner Hall

Benjamin Sumner came to Claremont about 1767; was selectman in 1769,
town clerk, and a large owner as proprietor of rights in the town and rep-
resentative to the legislature in 1784-85-93-94. He was not an ardent sup-
porter of the American cause during the Revolution, which doubtless had
much to do with his not having attained more important positions, as he
was a man of marked ability and qualified to serve. He lived at what is
now known as the ''Cupola farm.''

Thomas. They were killed with lightning July 8, 1S05,
Zara in his i8th year, Orlando in his 7th year."
The two boys were standing in an open doorway during a hard thunder
shower. Directly over their heads hung an old musket. This is supposed
to have attracted the lightning. A number of other people were in the
room at the time, and all were stunned. The lightning played curious
pranks with the furniture; a* single long sliver was taken by it out of a
hard wood table, doing it no other damage. The house where this occurred
stood in what was called "Punkshire," near the old Grannis homestead, in
West Claremont.

MORTUARY STATISTICS.

Xo records of deaths were kept in town, except by families, prior to 1846.
The compiler has, therefore, arranged by years the deaths as recorded by the
inscriptions. While it is certain that these do not icnlude all the deaths of
each year, it in some measure shows the death rate. From 1846 to date a
careful record has been kept, the credit for it being due Mr. Alfred Burrill, for
many years sexton of the town, and its continuance by his son, Mr. George H.
Burrill, his successor as sexton.

The ways of Death arc soothing and serene.
And all the words of Death are grave and sxveet.
From camf and church, tJie fireside and the street.
She beckons forth — a9id strife and song Jiave been.

A summer night descending cool and green,
And dark on daytime's dust attd stress and heat,
The ways of Death are soothing and serene.
And all the words of Deatli are graz'c and sweet .

O glad and sorrowful, with triumphant tnien
And radiant faces look upon and greet
This last of all y oil r lovers, and to meet
Her kiss, the Comforter' s, your spirt lean. . . .
The xvays of Death are soothing and serene.

— W. E. Henlev.
